WHO IS RAM?

The Road Asset Management (RAM) department, integral to the SAPOT Training Program, is dedicated to the maintenance and management of road signs, markings, and various statutory control matters across the SANRAL Southern Region. Our aim is to ensure the safety and guidance of road users, supported by our four specialized subunits: Road Signs, Road Markings, Private Tourism Signs, and Statutory Control.

WHY RAM?

The integration of RAM's four departments was strategized to harness the strengths of each unit, fostering enhanced collaboration, efficiency, and consistency across the SANRAL network. This unified model has significantly improved operational outcomes, ensuring a safer and more reliable road network for all users. Through this synergy, RAM demonstrates a proactive and comprehensive approach to road asset management, setting a benchmark for excellence in road safety and network management.

SCOPE OF OPERATIONS

The department's scope encompasses approximately 5177,24km of SANRAL's road network, accounting for about 22.51% of South Africa's total road network. This includes the management and planning for newly gazetted routes, ensuring a holistic and forward-looking approach to road safety and network integrity. By including future routes in its strategic planning, RAM ensures the SANRAL network remains at the forefront of safety and efficiency.

OBJECTIVES OF RAM

RAM's objectives are multifaceted, reflecting the department's commitment to road safety, operational excellence, and community development. These include: Ensuring the safety and navigability of the network. Maintaining a consistent and high standard of road asset management. Providing clear and reliable navigation aids to road users. Facilitating targeted training and development programs to uplift communities and foster economic growth. Enhancing employment opportunities through skill development and SMME empowerment
